The Sto-Rox School District is proud to introduce our new Superintendent, Mrs. Sonya Coleman, a dedicated professional with 25 years of experience in education, school transformation, and strategic leadership.
Mrs. Coleman brings an unwavering commitment to academic excellence and equity. Throughout her career, she has held roles such as Chief of Schools, Turnaround Superintendent, and Director of Personnel across both districts and government entities in Ohio, Tennessee, and now Pennsylvania. Whether she is casting district-wide academic visions, implementing project-based learning, or improving school operations, Mrs. Coleman has consistently focused on what matters most: student success.
Mrs. Coleman began her educational journey studying biology at Kent State University. She earned her bachelor's degree in sociology/corrections from the University of Akron, where she also completed her master's degree in administration, educational administration, and leadership. Additionally, she holds both a principal and superintendent's license. She is currently pursuing her Doctor of Education at Concordia University of Chicago.
Before joining Sto-Rox, Mrs. Coleman served as Chief of Schools at STEM Preparatory Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, where she coached principals, strengthened academic programs, and championed elevated expectations that led to improved school ratings. She also led efforts to close achievement gaps and raise graduation rates in her roles with the Akron Public Schools, Youngstown City School District, and Tennessee Department of Education.
Her extensive experience also includes roles as a biology teacher, principal, assistant principal, curriculum consultant, and interim director of federal and state programs. Throughout her career in districts, including Youngstown City Schools, Maple Heights City Schools, Akron Public Schools, and the Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County in Ohio, Mrs. Coleman has driven significant improvements, such as increased student achievement through sound instructional practices, increased attendance rates, and reduced suspension rates.
Mrs. Coleman’s passion for transformational change, data-informed decision-making, and her genuine commitment to community engagement will be vital to the Sto-Rox School District. We are excited to have her guidance and expertise as our district charts a brighter future.
Please join us in welcoming Mrs. Sonya Coleman to the Sto-Rox School District family.
