As part of its Black History Month celebrations, Sto-Rox Jr./Sr. High School hosted the Spell It Like It Is Spelling Bee Competition, sponsored by Steel City Impact.
Held in the school cafeteria, the competition brought together 16 students from 7th, 8th, and 9th grades for three exciting rounds of academically focused competition. Participants worked closely with their English teachers in the weeks leading up to the event, preparing to spell a variety of culturally themed words that reflected the spirit of Black History Month, including resilience, heritage, and courage.
The competition not only tested spelling ability but also highlighted the power of language and the importance of literacy, perseverance, and cultural awareness. Students demonstrated confidence and focus as they advanced through each round, cheered on by peers and staff.
After three rounds of competition, Lamya Porter, an 8th grade student, emerged as the first-place winner. Lamya was awarded a $100 prize and a trophy in recognition of her outstanding performance.
Sto-Rox extends its appreciation to Steel City Impact for sponsoring this meaningful event and supporting opportunities that celebrate academic achievement during Black History Month. Congratulations to all 16 students who participated and represented their school with pride.
