Sto-Rox Students Honored at 63rd Annual NEED Banquet

Five Sto-Rox students were recognized for their achievements on Friday, May 1, at the 63rd Annual NEED Honors Banquet, held at the Wyndham Grand Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh.

The annual event brings together students, educators, and community leaders to recognize academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to future success. This year, Sto-Rox seniors were among those honored as scholarship recipients:

  • Marcus Griffin – NEED Achiever Scholarship

  • Jaliya Kerney – NEED Achiever Scholarship

  • Jazlyne McGhee – Dr. Quinn Bullock Scholarship

  • Destiney Robinson – Dr. Lenall Thomas Memorial Scholarship

  • Mubarak Salifu – NEED Achiever Scholarship

In addition to receiving a scholarship, Marcus Griffin had the honor of speaking during the program, where he introduced the evening’s Master of Ceremonies, Dr. Quintin B. Bullock, president of Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC).

Students in grades 9 and 10 were also invited to attend as potential future scholarship recipients, giving them a valuable opportunity to experience the celebration and begin envisioning their own paths to success. Seniors Madison Schmitt and Lila Dumas attended as members of NEED’s Future Educators Club, further highlighting the district’s commitment to preparing the next generation of educators.

Throughout the evening, students engaged in meaningful conversations and networking opportunities with community leaders, including Mel and Tianda Blount of the Mel Blount Youth Home. These connections helped to reinforce the importance of mentorship, service, and giving back.

Sto-Rox extends its sincere gratitude to National Education for Equity Development and its President and CEO, Dr. Marcia Sturdivant, for their continued support of Sto-Rox students. Their generosity, including sponsoring a table for underclassmen, made it possible for more students to take part in this inspiring experience.

A special thank you to Superintendent Sonya Coleman for attending alongside students and celebrating their accomplishments.

Congratulations to all of our students for representing Sto-Rox with pride and excellence
