Sto-Rox Upper Elementary Launches House System to Boost School Spirit and Achievement

Excitement filled the halls of Sto-Rox Upper Elementary (SRUE) on September 25, 2025, as students in grades 4-6 received their house shirts during the official House System kickoff meeting, launching an innovative program designed to foster school spirit, leadership, and academic excellence.

Last spring, SRUE introduced a soft launch of its PBIS House System following extensive training and inspiration from the nationally renowned Ron Clark Academy (RCA) in Atlanta, Georgia, a school known for its innovative approach to education and exceptional school culture. Over the summer, teachers and administrators visited RCA and attended a comprehensive two-day training.

The system groups students, staff, and faculty into smaller “houses” that compete in friendly events designed to build community, strengthen school spirit, and promote accountability.

Every SRUE student and staff member has been placed into one of the four globally themed houses, each representing important values and drawing from rich cultural traditions:

  • Altruismo – House of Givers (Brazilian origins): Emphasizing generosity and community service

  • Amistad – House of Friendship (Spanish origins): Focusing on collaboration and support

  • Isibindi – House of Courage (Zulu origins): Celebrating bravery and determination

  • Reveur – House of Dreamers (French origins): Inspiring innovation and aspiration

The House System operates on a point-based recognition system where students can earn rewards for positive behavior, teamwork, and leadership. The system’s core goal is to encourage positive behavior and support academic achievement, creating a comprehensive culture of recognition and pride throughout the school.

SRUE has already seen improvements in key areas, including increased attendance, reduced discipline referrals, and improved MAP testing scores, creating a strong foundation for the House System’s implementation.

The success of the House System has been bolstered by tremendous community support from local businesses and organizations. Generous donations such as concert tickets, Chick-fil-A meal cards, free karate classes, Robert Morris University swag, along with other items and experiences have been received. These donations will serve as rewards and incentives, helping to sustain student motivation and engagement throughout the school year.

The House System represents more than just friendly competition; it’s about building a stronger school community where every student feels valued, supported, and motivated to achieve their best—operating under the motto “Four House One Family.” By combining the proven strategies from the Ron Clark Academy with strong community partnerships and dedicated staff commitment, SRUE is positioning itself as a leader in innovative educational approaches.

As students proudly wear their house shirts and begin earning points for their teams, the House System promises to transform the educational experience at SRUE, creating lasting memories and instilling values that will serve students well beyond their elementary years.
