Last year, the Allegheny Intermediate Unit’s (AIU) K-12 ESL Program lost a beloved ESL teacher, Jessica Bartholomew. To honor her memory and continue her legacy, the department is hosting a multicultural book drive.
Through this effort, the AIU hopes to collect books to donate to school libraries and ESL classrooms. By sharing the gift Jessica cherished most—books—her love of reading and dedication to multilingual learners will live on.
Books will be collected until June and distributed over the summer so they are ready for students in the Fall. They are collecting:
Books for grades K–12
Stories featuring multicultural characters, settings, and perspectives
Bilingual and native language books
Hardcover books suitable for school libraries (preferred)
Duplicate titles are welcome, as books will be shared across multiple schools and districts
If you prefer to purchase books online, an Amazon book list with recommended inclusive titles is available here.
All donations can be delivered to any AIU ESL Classroom or the AIU Central Office (475 E. Waterfront Drive, Homestead, PA 15120).
